ROCKY KNOB MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK

Rocky Knob Mountain Bike Park is a 185 acre park located in Boone, NC.  The park was started in 2009 with two grants from the Bikes Belong Foundation and Specialized Bicycles. Trails were built with a combination of professional trail builders like Terra Tek Trials along with hundreds of hours of volunteer work from the local riding community. The park includes over 8 miles of trail including a pumptrack, skills areas, playground, restrooms and a picnic area.

Through a collaboration between KEEN and the Boone Area Cyclists club, we were able to build two new beginner-friendly trails at Rocky Knob Park.  Until now, there were no options for true beginners to ride trails at Rocky Knob due to it being very rocky.  We found out that under all of those rocks, there was actually really good dirt!  One trail is a short climbing trail that is very low grade and makes a short loop utilizing a downhill section of Rocky Branch trail.  The other is a downhill connector that makes a little easier route down from higher up on the mountain.  This was a hybrid project, where volunteer members of the local bike club helped with corridor work and hand finish work, a nice way to get locals involved and also cut costs.
